In the second verse of the song, Kesha says, “Too sweet and you’ll be gone. / Yeah, I’ll drag Jeffrey Dahmer.”

Certain lyrics referring to serial killers have received new scrutiny following Netflix’s limited series. Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer (which in itself has been the subject of criticism).

After working on certain lyrics, Pepe said that Kesha was too young to even know who Jeffrey Dahmer was and that his name was included in the song because of the rhyme program for composer MasterWriter that Pepe was using.

“We were looking for luck on ‘Gonner,’” she explained. “At the very end of the most extensive rhyme there was ‘Jeffrey Dahmer.’ And I thought, ‘Oh my God, perfect lyrics.’”

“Once again, Jeffrey Dahmer’s name would not have been in the song if it weren’t for the MasterWriter who put his name there, unfortunately because he was the one who became famous for what he did.”

“Jeffrey Dahmer was just part of the culture at the time,” she added. “Everyone has been talking about him for years. What he did was extreme and far worse than anything anyone could have known.”

Pepe also explained that the song was not intended to be “insensitive to someone whose family is involved in this matter and who has lost a loved one.”

“It was the song we were writing about Kesha at the time,” she said of the origins of ‘cannibals’. “Kesha wasn’t the most popular girl in high school. She wasn’t even invited to the ball after all.”

“Later, when she became famous, all these guys who didn’t pay any attention to her came up to me and said, ‘Remember me? Do you remember me?’ And she said, ‘Yeah, now that I’m famous, you’re in my ass.’”

“It was a catchy and fun song. It wasn’t really about cannibalism. It was just the title.”

“I’m sorry to those who lost their family in this tragedy,” Pepe said.
